In the wake of Royal Chefs – cooking contest in Nagyszakácsi
Nagyszakácsi (the name refers to great cooks) is a village of medieval origin, in a region where in the Middle Ages Hungarian kings used to accord estates do their retiring cooks.
The Royal Chefs Cooking Contest takes place annually on the first weekend of August in Nagyszakácsi.
The competing groups have to prepare their meals with XIV-XVth Century ingredients, spices and historical cooking methods. The baroque gastronomy culture also appears in the call for competition and there is a category for the art of food decoration, too. The organizers emphasize medieval atmosphere and include programs evoking the Renaissance, with costumed performers such as Renaissance musicians, dancers, flag bearers, but there are jousting events, giants on tilts, fire jugglers and archery as well as medieval knights’ tents.
Street stalls with handicrafts evoking the atmosphere of medieval marketplaces are also installed.
