Balatonszemes is located on the south shore of Lake Balaton. Situated on the hillside, the town opens its heart to the water. Trees share their shadows with magnificent old villas, giving a romantic appearance to the city centre. Almost every apartment, house and villa in the town has a view of Lake Balaton.
It is amazing that Balatonszemes appeared as a bathing resort as early as in 1880, while other resorts of the regions only became popular in the twenties and thirties of the 20th century. Even today Balatonszemes is a popular tourist destination. Various art exhibitions and classical music concerts take place every summer in the village.
There are some historical monuments and tourists attractions in the village. Among other attractions the Roman Catholic Church and the building of the primary school is charming – it once was the palace of count Hunyady. The Postal Museum pays tribute to the arduous work of postmen. In the exhibition you will be able to see old horse-drawn post carriages and the introduction of a post station from the 18th century. Szemes is the birthplace of the Hungarian graphic artist Károly Reich, who illustrated a huge number of children and youth books, so there is a small memorial exhibition in deference to the artist.
The little town has a population of about 1800 citizens, but its port has enough space for more than 130 sailboats.
Balatonszemes is a perfect place for a vacation, where you can obtain real experience of Hungarian life, taste local wine, get acquainted with native art and enjoy the charm of the place.
