Dörgicse

The village of Dörgicse came into being by the unification of three hamlets (Felsődörgicse, Alsódörgicse and Kisdörgicse; Boldogaszony-dörgicse, Szentpéterdörgicse and Kisfaluddörgicse) built on the slopes north of Lake Balaton and surrounded by vineyards, meadows and forests. The settlement is famous for the wine production and its medieval ruins which were devastated during the Turkish rule in the 16th and 17th centuries. The first charter mentioning Dörgicse originates from as early as 1082. Historical remains of temple ruins (remains of Saint Nicholas church of Kis-Dörgicse built of basalt stones in the Romanesque style in the 13th century, the 11th century church ruins of Felső-Dörgicse and the 13th century monastery ruins of Alsó-Dörgicse) and foot-stones of dwelling houses make the place attractive for excursions. The village actually has four operating churches: three are protestant and one catholic.
