Révfülöp

Révfülöp (rév=ferry and Fülöp=Philip), a holiday resort with 1300 inhabitants, is situated on the picturesque north shore of Lake.

During the reign of sovereign Árpád in the Xth century, a little fishing-village was established around the ferry. The local ferry was already mentioned in the 11th century under the name of Philip as part of the Tihany Benedictine Estate. In the 13th century a little church made of red sandstone (the typical building material of the region) was built for the village. The ruins of the temple can be seen opposite to the railway station. In 1548 the Turkish army burnt down the flourishing village which became totally uninhabited. But Fülöp revived from its ashes from the 18th century during which new owners beside the Tihany Benedictine Abbey appeared in the territory and viticulure flourished again. In 1752, ferry shipping was restarted and in 1779 a new crossing point and ferry-house was built. At the late 19th century the prospering viticulture was ruined by phylloxera, so development of the village practically started again. Enthusiastic local people led by Károly Czigány supported the development of the village to be a bath- and holiday resort. Thanks to its natural endowments and picturesque beauty, by the end of the century Révfülöp became a popular holiday resort. Teachers, scientists, factory-owners, army officers and state officials established vineyards, villas and summer cottages in the village. In 1909 Révfülöp was connected to the national railway network. In 1912 the modern pier was built and a decade later a primary school was founded. Thanks to the spectacular development Révfülöp, which was part of Kővágóörs at the time, gained the holiday resort status in 1933 and from 1943 became an independent settlement. From 1969 it became an outstanding holiday resort and the centre of the region.

The centre of Révfülöp is situated between the Szigeti and the Császtai Beach. The Europa Promenade along the shore offers a pleasant walk. On the slopes of the charming Fülöp Hill dotted with summer cottages and villas, the famous produce, the "Real friendship and marriage wine" is grown - as Béla Hamvas philosopher depicted it.

Visitors can enjoy the fascinating panorama from the Look-out Tower built in 2001 atop Fülöp Hill.

The region provides a lot of opportunities for excursions: in the landscape-protection area of the Káli Basin, natural curiosities (the basalt cone of Hegyestű, the ‘Seas of Stones’ in Kővágóörs, the crater-lakes of Fekete Hill, famous mineral springs), rich flora and fauna, and ethnographical and historical curiosities and cultural programmes in the villages attract visitors. Apart from its attractive summer programmes (Villa Filip Days, concerts, etc.) and the exhibitions of 'Tóparti' Gallery, the permanent exhibitions of the Local Historical Museum) the village is also known for its bustling night life in Summer.
